The Beginning: Wheels to the Masses?

Roller skating's transformation as a mass sport is an international tale.

Explore the first introduction of roller skating to the public. This exhibit highlights the public's reaction to this early invention and the subsequent race to create the best skate to use among not only the masses but in entertainment too. Thousands of people were entertained by early roller skaters who appeared at balls, theaters, and other public events. The National Museum of Roller Skating explores how this early phenomenon led to roller skating's popularity which has endured to this day.
