Lincoln, NE - With support from Humanities Nebraska through the National Endowment for the Humanities ARPA Grant, the National Museum of Roller Skating began an ambitious project in 2022 to digitally catalog the museum’s entire collection.

The mission of the National Museum of Roller Skating remains the same. The Museum believes that roller skating is a shared experience for many generations of Americans—as recreation, sport, and a commercial enterprise. The NMRS remains committed to enriching the experience of roller skaters and non-skaters alike by increasing their understanding and appreciation of its rich history and accomplishments, expanding public knowledge of these past events, and preserving this legacy for future generations.

One of the museum's guiding principles is access. The National Museum of Roller Skating values access to its collections; it is always working to ensure the public can access and engage with them. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the museum learned a valuable lesson: to further bring its collections to the public, the NMRS needed to pivot to ensure it remained accessible and continued to meet its mission.

"The Musuem is coming to you," says Board of Trustees President Ed Hughes. Anyone, anywhere in the world, can now look through the museum's online exhibits and learn more about the unique history of roller skating. Museum Staff, interns, and volunteers have worked and continue to work to photograph everything in the NMRS's care and to ensure the catalog records for collection items are accurate.

The museum's online exhibits are hosted by CatalogIt Hub.

Currently, the museum's online exhibits include the Postcard collection. Comprising 412 items from 174 donors, the museum hopes that skaters and non-skaters alike will enjoy the stories and distinct skating experiences the postcards represent. Postcards often show what the collector wanted to re-experience as they collected or sent postcards of specific topics and moments in time to their peers.
